Harford County Jail Roster Overview
The Harford County Sheriff's Office runs the county jail and court services. It is the largest sheriff's office in Maryland, led by Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler, with 684 sworn and civilian staff serving about 268,000 residents. Unlike some counties, Harford does not publish a searchable inmate roster on its website. The detention page points the public to VINE for custody status and release alerts.
VINE has limits. It tells you whether a person is in custody and where, but it is not the full court file. It may not show charges, bond, or the next court date. It also does not cover people held in state prison or federal custody, who appear in other systems.
Sheriff Gahler's official biography sets out the size and scope of the agency.

The Sheriff's biography page notes the office provides law enforcement, court services, and correctional services. The Detention Center is the place where a county inmate search begins.
How to Use the Harford County Inmate Search
The fastest custody check is Maryland VINE. It is free, works by phone or online, and covers county custody. The steps below walk through a name search and a notification sign-up.
- Open Maryland VINE and choose Maryland as the state.
- Search by the person's name or, if known, an offender or inmate ID.
- Review the result for custody status and the holding facility.
- Register a phone, email, or text alert to learn when the status changes.
If VINE cannot answer a question, call the Harford County Detention Center at 410-638-3140. For charges, bond, and hearing dates, open the court case in Maryland Case Search instead.
Roster Search Fields
VINE keeps the search simple. You select the state, then enter a name or ID. The notification step needs your own contact details. The table lists the main fields.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| State | Dropdown / map | Yes | Select Maryland. |
| Name | Text | One term needed | Search by offender or inmate name. |
| ID Number | Text | No | Use an offender or inmate ID if you have it. |
| Facility / Agency | Filter | No | Narrows by facility where the interface allows. |
| Register for Notification | Workflow | No | Needs your phone, email, or text contact for alerts. |
What an Inmate Profile Shows
A VINE custody result is short and focused. It confirms the person and the facility, not the full case. The inventory below reflects what a Harford custody result usually holds, based on the Sheriff's stated VINE scope.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Full Name | The person matched in the custody search. |
| Custody Status | In custody, released, or transferred. |
| Facility | Harford County Detention Center for county custody. |
| Offender / Booking ID | An ID may appear when the source data includes it. |
| Notification Options | Phone, email, or text alerts you can register. |
| Charges / Bond / Court Date | Not guaranteed from VINE; verify with the court case. |

Booking Process in Harford County
Booking starts when the Sheriff's Office brings an arrestee to the Detention Center. The Sheriff's pre-booking policy says every arrestee must see a District Court Commissioner within 24 hours. Intake usually includes a search, a medical and pre-book screening, identity and charge processing, property handling, and classification.
The commissioner reviews the charges and sets the first release terms or a bond. From there, the case moves to the District Court or the Circuit Court, depending on the charge. A bond can be posted at the jail or as the commissioner directs, but the person still must appear on the court date.
Classification places each person in a housing unit based on the charge, history, and safety needs. The Detention Center follows PREA guidelines, the federal standards meant to prevent and respond to sexual abuse in custody. These steps explain why a newly booked person may not show full details on a custody search right away.
Visitation Hours and Rules
Visits at the Detention Center run on weekends and must be scheduled in advance. Registration and scheduling go through GTL at gtlvisitme.com, and the Sheriff's page says to use a Google browser. A visit must be booked at least two days ahead, and changes or cancellations also need two days' notice. Each inmate gets one visit per week, with up to two visitors including children, for 30 minutes.
| Day | Hours | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | No scheduled visitation | - |
| Tuesday | No scheduled visitation | - |
| Wednesday | No scheduled visitation | - |
| Thursday | No scheduled visitation | - |
| Friday | No scheduled visitation | - |
| Saturday | 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. | Scheduled visit via GTL |
| Sunday | 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. | Scheduled visit via GTL |
Bring a valid government photo ID, and arrive at the main entrance no later than 15 minutes before the start. Visitors must be on the inmate's visiting list, park in the upper lot, and follow the dress code, which requires clothing to cover from neck to kneecaps. Cell phones must be silenced and stored; if a phone rings in the locker, the visit ends.
The dress and property rules are specific. No coats, jackets, or hoodies are allowed unless placed in a locker right away. No handbags, purses, or briefcases come in. Gang colors, logos, and signs are barred. A visitor under 18 must come with an adult, and the lower lot is restricted except for a valid handicap placard. A translator is required if a visitor does not speak English or is hearing impaired.
Note: The jail may cancel or suspend visits for security or health reasons without notice, with email sent to the registration address if a visit is canceled.
How to Contact a Harford County Inmate
Mail rules at the Detention Center are strict. Personal letters must be commercially produced postcards that meet USPS standards. Handmade postcards, index cards, stickers, and stained or marked items are rejected. Photos must be on photo paper, no larger than 4x6, and free of explicit or gang content. All mail must name the inmate and include the inmate's ID number.
The Sheriff's contact page lists the headquarters, precincts, Detention Center, and unit phone numbers.

Use the Sheriff's contact page to reach the right office. Postal mail goes to Harford County Detention Center, Inmate Name and ID #, P.O. Box 1245, Bel Air, MD 21014. The jail also uses Access Corrections secure mail for electronic messages and photos. Legal mail from courts or counsel may come in envelopes and is opened and inspected in the inmate's presence.
Books and publications follow their own rules. Magazines and publications must come directly from the publisher or distributor, not a third party, and must be new. As of the June 2025 update, only books from listed sources are accepted, they must be mailed through USPS, and no hardback or used books are allowed. Anything that fails these rules is returned rather than delivered.
Commissary and Inmate Funds
The Detention Center posts a payment page for inmate funds and related services. Deposit methods and any fees can change, so confirm the current vendor, limits, and charges on the official payment page before you send money. The Sheriff's payment page at harfordsheriff.org/detention/payment is the source to verify amounts and accepted methods.
Phone calls and electronic messages run through the jail's vendor systems, the same kind used for visit scheduling and secure mail. Set up an account before you try to add money or schedule a call. Keep the inmate's full name and ID number ready, since every deposit and message ties to that ID. Do not send cash or items the mail rules do not allow, because they will be returned.
State and Federal Custody Searches
VINE covers county custody, not state prison or federal custody. A person sentenced to state prison appears in the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services inmate locator. A person in federal custody appears in the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator.
The federal BOP locator searches by name or by a register number.

Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator for federal inmates, including prior federal custody. For state-sentenced inmates, the Maryland DPSCS locator is the right tool. Picking the correct system is the key to a clean result.
The split matters. A county jail like the Detention Center holds people awaiting trial and those serving shorter local sentences. People sentenced to longer terms move to state prison under DPSCS. Federal cases never enter the county system at all. Victims and interested parties who want release alerts should register on VINE rather than rely on a one-time check, since custody status can change without notice.
